Poverello was founded in 1979 by Jan Vermeire. After a successful career, he was converted and retreated into the woods. When he came back he realised something needed to be done. The story of Jan’s life is also Poverello’s. His story inspired many. Read more on how Poverello came into being.

Poverello welcomes those big and small, who look for meaning in life, who wish to receive by giving, and who truly value the heart over material things. We try to live in solidarity and communion with the poor, our volunteers and God, knowing that we are all part of the same human family.
